Wheel decide on learning habits - Indirect questions.
REMEMBER: Indirect questions follow the same word order as affirmative statements, i.e. SVO. Have a look at the follwoing examples:
  1.  I wonder where you live.
  2. I don't know what your name is.
  3. I'd love to know why you have enrolled yourself in this blended learning course.

Tuesday 20th September

  • Forum: What are you like? Oral + Written version please. Remember the use of these B2 level structures:
    • Be the sort of guy that -s/-es...
    • Tend to be... Have the tendency to...
    • Be considered as.... Be regarded as...
    • Happen to be...
    • I'm anything but...
    • This is so me...
    • This is me to a tee.
    • I actually can't help being that way.
    • Be said to be...
    • Be supposed to be...
    • Far from it.
  • MODEL TEXT 2:
    • Any time I'm asked to describe myself, I do find it really hard. But let me tell you I'm not the sort of person who is particularly outgoing or extrovert at first. Don't get me wrong! I mean, I do enjoy going out and other people's company, but you need to get to know me before you meet the friendly and amusing girl there is in me. I'm also regarded as stubborn and pigheaded but I couldn't disagree more. It's simply that I'm determined and goal-oriented and I know what I want. I tend to think people get confused and get the wrong impression, but the truth is they have absolutedly no idea what I am like.

Intro test to see how well you cope with listening tasks at a B1 level:

Tuesday 27th September

Can you figure out what kind of hilarious situations these false friends might lead to?
    1. constipated
    2. casualty
    3. embarrassed
    4. preservative
    5. molest

Find in this book a daily programme of our face to face lessons with links to the contents and tasks presented in every class. Please click on next or in the week you want to have a look at.

Tuesday 4th October
  1. Constipated - Beep...! You meant bunged up, didn't you?
  2. Casualty - Beep...! You meant what a coincidence, right?
  3. Embarrassed - Beep...! You did mean pregnant, what else?
  4. Preservative - Beep...! Easy to put your foot in it. It means anything but condom!
  5. Molest - Beep...! Stop bothering me! I didn't mean to imply sexual harassment of anything of the sort!
  • Speaking: Can you tell us an annecdote you or someone you know has experienced which led to a hilarious situation
  • Mediation: Proven strategies to learn a foreign language. Oral mediation: Proven strategies to learn a foreign language!
    • SAMPLE:
      • When it comes to learning a foreign language, there's a number of strategies which might come in handy. Let me explain further, I mean....
        1. Try not to overdo it or be too ambitious. There's no poing in getting bogged down as no good will come out of it.
        2. Another good piece of advice you can follow is to avoid learning backwards. Why don't we stick to the way we learn our mother tongue? You see, we first listen, then we speak and later on we read and write. I think the way we try to learn our second language is anything but effective. There should be a lot more listening and speaking involved.
        3. And last but not least, let me tell you that by connecting the language to our real world and learning words in context, we will not only be more successful but we will also enjoy the ride.
        • So, you know it, if you follow these pieces of advice you are bound to improve a great deal without even being aware of it.

11th October

MODULE 1 - Family and human relations! (27th Sep - 15 Oct)

UNDONE & LEFT FOR TODAY:

18th October: LEARNING TO COPE WITH ORAL INTERACTIONS IN EXAMS!

You and your mate are trying to find a picture to illustrate an article on the most effective  ways to learn a foreign language. Talk to him/her and reach an agreement on which picture is the most suitable one. Remember to justify your choice and provide enough reasoning and arguments.

    • Important elemements to include in an interaction:
  1. rule out=discard (I've decided to rule out...)
  2. choose=pick=go for (If I just had to choose one, I'd go for)
  3. Do not use because. Instead, use "I mean", "You know".
  4. Interrupt your mate by saying:
    1. I see your point.
    2. ...wouldn't you say?
    3. I agree with you on this.
    4. You might be right, but...
    5. I couldn't agree with you more.
  5. Emphasize your comparative adjectives like (appealing, eye-catching...) by adding:
    1. far/much/a lot.... more interesting.
    2. a bit/a little/slightly... more attractive
TO BE DONE NEXT WEEK AS YOU'RE LIKELY NOT TO HAVE FACE TO FACE LESSONS.

  • Time to unwind before moving on with a light-hearted task: -ing versus -ed adjectives. To cut a long story short:

  • Speaking: Ability: Talking without focusing on errors but on communicating: Speak your mind while talking about some of the topics:
  1. something you've struggle to learn,
  2. something you'd be eager to learn but have not managed to do so far,
  3.  something you've always been hopeless at, etc.
    Try to use:
      • was/were able to
      • managed to
      • succeeded in...
      • get the hang of ...
      • be gifted at...
      • be hopeless at...
EXTRA: Grammar stuff - Videos to watch in case you had difficulty understanding the handout about "Ability" or today's tasks.

    • Make it simple, get it right! IN A NUTSHELL:
      • I prefer "doing sth" to "doing sth else" - IN GENERAL
      • I'd rather "do sth" than "do sth else" - DESIRES
      • I'd rather "someone else" "did sth"- Attention: Different subjects.
  • Speaking - Tell us about:
    • Your own family. (Remember! - grew up - was raised - was brought up)
    • Your personal preference (Remember to
      • provide arguments, reasons or justifications. Eg. In the future I'd love to have a big family. I want my children to have someone to play with, to hang around with, to do stuff with. You see, me, being an only child, I've felt lonely from time to time and I've always missed a brother or sister to talk to.
      • use elements from the handout above
    • Now you're ready to talke part in the forum (oral mode) using the stuff learnt today in class). Types of families Forum

Wenesday 6th Feb

Wesnesday 14th Feb - MOCK EXAM -

  • Carnival holiday - Day off - Catch up with your modules

Wednesday 21st Feb

  • To be continued:

Wednesday 28th Feb

EXTRA LISTENING PRACTICE: Top 10 pet peeves

    • Further listening practice: Ex 1-Top ten pet peeves (edpuzzle platform).

Here's what you can do do deal with the listening "TOP TEN PET PEEVES"

This is a video with embedded questions for you to practise your listening. It's another video about pet peeves similar to the one about rants & raves we covered in class. This time the title is "TOP 10 PET PEEVES". Hope you enjoy it and helps you improve a bit your listening skills.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Option 1- CLICK ON THIS LINK and do it on your own:

Option 2- LIVE MODE to be done in class with the rest of the group:

THINGS TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION BEFORE WATCHING THE VIDEO:

When the video pauses, have a look at either a note or a question for you to answer on the right side of the video. If the former, simply click on the button that says "Continue". If the latter, then you can do three things:

a) Rewatch - This means watch again the video for you to be able to answer the question posed.

b) Skip - If you do want to move on without answering the question.

c) Submit - If you have already given an answer and want to send it for correction. You will get some feedback on the corrected answers so that you can compare them with yours. Then click on continue.

Good luck!

To check the edpuzzle listening about "Top 10 pet peeves", there's nothing you have to do but stop to read carefully once you submit your answer. Let me make myself understood. I mean, when the video stops and a question pops up so that you can fill in the gap, then you just need to rewatch the video as many times as you need and then once you write down your answer and click on the button "Submit" you will see below your answer the correct answer given to you as feedback by your teacher. Once you check whether you were right or wrong, you can click on the button "Continue" to move on and complete the rest of the questions in the listening exercise.

I'm afraid you will have to skip the two last questions of the video as the platform does not allow me to do so. Next time I'll be more careful to avoid this type of technological glitches.

Tuesday 3rd April

  • Speaking task: Monologue (part 2): 1'30" speech delivery using "work lexis learnt last week" as well as "2 learnt verb patterns you can find in the first box you'll find in unit 55 in the verb patterns handout.
  • Verb patterns  - Oral drill which happens to be far more effective and long-lasting.
    1. Unit 53 - Verbs + -ing
    2. Unit 54 - Verbs + to + infinitive
    3. Unit 55 - Verbs + sb + to + infinitive
    • ATTENTION:
    1. Verbs like "agree", "fail", "succeed in", "look forward to"... are really useful and often overlooked.
    2. When talking about the world of work the "passive" is of paramount importance: "be paid", "be made redundant", "be promoted", "be asked to do overtime"...

  • HOMEWORK: Try to overuse some of the verb patterns practised in today's class while preparing the draft similar to the one I asked you to do in today's class just jotting down key elements. It goes without saying you should later on try to time yourself and try to deliver your speech using the diagram. The thing is, one key diagram and then as many different versions of the speech as speech deliveries you give.
    • Job interviews: Mediation (2') + Oral production (3') :
  1. Tips to give a good impression at a job interview:
  2. Opinion on "dress code" for a job interview.
  3. Account of a job interview (your own or someone else's you know well).

  • Remember every two Tuesdays we have our American language assisstant online from 18.10 to 19.00. If you want to practise your listening skills while broadening your cultural understanding you are more than welcome to join us by clicking here or in the link you'll find on the right in your moodle platform:

Tuesday 18th April

  • All work & no play...Page Finish it off:
    • Match your personality to the job - Quizz & solution + Mediation of elements using a variety of "verbs patterns" + "be likely to".
      •  Sample: You see, I'm the sort of person who happens to be quite indecisive. I'm not particularly great at making quick decisions, which is why I would never dream of becoming an accountant or anything similar. However, I don't mind improvising and I need to be creative to feel good. I've always done my best to follow my instincts. Theoretically, according to my personality, I was likely to enjoy a job where I could show off my specific talents. I imagine that's why I've ended up being a teacher. I am in my element.
    • Speaking exam practice: 1-Interviews + 2-Work
      1. Opinion on "dress code" for a job interview.
      2. Account of a job interview (your own or someone else's you know well).
