Silence is the absence of sound or noise.

IN PHYSICS it is impossible the total lack of sound or noise.  We always hear something (for example our breathe).  MUSIC depends on silence in some form or another to distinguish periods of sound, dynamics, melodies and rhythms to have greater impact. RESTS denoting periods of silence.
