- Five techniques rewritten using "expressions + -ing":

- Have difficulty...
- be/get used to...
- avoid...
- look forward to...
- Oral mediation: Delivering a 2' speech in groups of 4.
18th October: LEARNING TO COPE WITH ORAL INTERACTIONS IN EXAMS!
- Oral interaction: Exam practice: Language Learning - What to do and what to avoid!
You and your mate are trying to find a picture to illustrate an article on the most effective ways to learn a foreign language. Talk to him/her and reach an agreement on which picture is the most suitable one. Remember to justify your choice and provide enough reasoning and arguments.

- Important elemements to include in an interaction:
- rule out=discard (I've decided to rule out...)
- choose=pick=go for (If I just had to choose one, I'd go for)
- Do not use because. Instead, use "I mean", "You know".
- Interrupt your mate by saying:
- I see your point.
- ...wouldn't you say?
- I agree with you on this.
- You might be right, but...
- I couldn't agree with you more.
- Emphasize your comparative adjectives like (appealing, eye-catching...) by adding:
- far/much/a lot.... more interesting.
- a bit/a little/slightly... more attractive
- Further practice: Take it easy: Just learn a couple of elements to butt in conversations: Boosting your interactions: LD-Having conversations - Butting in and sounding both polite and natural.
TO BE DONE NEXT WEEK AS YOU'RE LIKELY NOT TO HAVE FACE TO FACE LESSONS.
- Time to unwind before moving on with a light-hearted task: -ing versus -ed adjectives. To cut a long story short:
- -ing adjectives: QUALITY (forever)
- -ed adjectives: STATE (comes and goes)
- -ing versus -ed adjectives

- Speaking: Ability: Talking without focusing on errors but on communicating: Speak your mind while talking about some of the topics:
- something you've struggle to learn,
- something you'd be eager to learn but have not managed to do so far,
- something you've always been hopeless at, etc.
- was/were able to
- managed to
- succeeded in...
- get the hang of ...
- be gifted at...
- be hopeless at...
- Make it simple, get it right! IN A NUTSHELL:
- I prefer "doing sth" to "doing sth else" - IN GENERAL
- I'd rather "do sth" than "do sth else" - DESIRES
- I'd rather "someone else" "did sth"- Attention: Different subjects.
- Speaking - Tell us about:
- Your own family. (Remember! - grew up - was raised - was brought up)
- Your personal preference (Remember to
- provide arguments, reasons or justifications. Eg. In the future I'd love to have a big family. I want my children to have someone to play with, to hang around with, to do stuff with. You see, me, being an only child, I've felt lonely from time to time and I've always missed a brother or sister to talk to.
- use elements from the handout above
- Now you're ready to talke part in the forum (oral mode) using the stuff learnt today in class). Types of families Forum
