Slide 2 – The Respiratory System

  • The respiratory system includes the lungs, airways (bronchi), and diaphragm.

  • Main functions: 

    • Bring oxygen to the body
    • Remove carbon dioxide

Slide 3 – Asthma Attack

  • An asthma attack is a condition where the airways become narrow and inflamed, making it difficult to breathe.
  • Possible causes:

    • Allergens (dust, pollen, animals)
    • Exercise
    • Cold air
    • Stress
  • Risk factors:

    • History of asthma
    • Allergies
    • Exposure to smoke or pollution

Slide 4 – Signs and symptoms

  • Symptoms (what the patient feels): 

    • Difficulty breathing
    • Tightness in the chest
    • Anxiety
  • Signs (what we can observe):
    • Wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing)
    • Rapid breathing
    • The patient may speak in short sentences only
    • Use of neck and chest muscles to breathe

Slide 5 – EMS response

  • Step 1: Assess the patient
    • Check airway, breathing, circulation (ABC)
    • Ask if the patient has history of asthma
  • Step 2: Position the patient
    • Help the patient sit upright
    • Keep them calm
  • Step 3: Assist breathing
    • Give oxygen using an oxygen mask
    • Help the patient use their inhaler if available
  • Step 4: Monitor condition
    • Check breathing rate and effort
    • Watch for worsening symptoms
  • Step 5: Prepare for transport
    • Be ready to move the patient using a stretcher if necessary
    • Continue monitoring during transport
