SPEAKING PROJECT: Diseases investigation
DISEASE INVESTIGATION PRESENTATION
Approach: Now that we have studied anatomy and physiology, we understand how the body works. As future pharmacy assistants/technicians, it is important to:
-
Know common diseases
-
Recognise symptoms
-
Understand basic treatments
-
Give correct advice to patients
Development:
Step 1: Form Groups
Work in groups of 3–4 students. Choose one disease from the list:
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: Ashtma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer.
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: Heart attack, stroke, arrhythmia.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: Gastritis, Crohn's disease, colon cancer.
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM: Diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism.
NERVOUS SYSTEM: Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, migraine, epilepsy.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES: HIV, hepatitis B/C, malaria, meningitis.
Step 2: Research your disease
Find clear and simple information about:
-
What is it? (Short definition)
-
Causes – Why does it happen?
-
Risk factors – Who is more likely to get it?
-
Signs and symptoms – What does the patient feel?
-
Diagnosis – How do doctors detect it?
-
Treatment – Medicines and other treatments
Step 3: Create a Slide Presentation
Prepare a PowerPoint / Google Slides presentation / Canva with the most relevant information about the disease.
Your presentation must include:
-
✅ Title slide (Disease name + group members)
-
✅ Index (sections of your presentation)
-
✅ Clear information slides
-
✅ Images or diagrams (if possible)
-
✅ Bibliography (sources of information)
🚨Important:
-
Do NOT copy and paste large paragraphs.
-
Use short sentences or bullet points.
-
Use medical vocabulary from this unit.
Step 4: Write 5 comprehension questions
At the end of your presentation, create 5 questions about your disease.
Example:
-
What are the main symptoms of asthma?
-
What medication is commonly used to treat it?
Your classmates must answer the questions in their notebooks.
Step 5: Presentation day
-
Each group will present for 5–10 minutes.
-
Speak clearly and share the speaking time.
-
At the end, ask your 5 questions to the class.
