Countable nouns

  • We can count them: one bandage, two bandages, etc
  • They can be plural
  • Examples: bandages, stretcher, gloves, defibrillator, paramedic
Uncountable

  • We cannot count them individually
  • They do not have a plural form
  • Examples: medicine, equipment, blood, oxygen, advice

  SINGULAR/Uncountable PLURAL
POSITIVE

There is a patient waiting.

There is some medicine in the ambulance.

 There are three patients waiting.
NEGATIVE

There isn't a thermometer in the first-aid kit.

There isn't any disinfectant in the ambulance.

 There aren't any gloves left.
QUESTIONS

Is there a stretcher for the patient?

Is there any oxygen in tanks?

 Are there any vaccines?

🟠 SOME / ANY

  Countable (plural) Uncountable
POSITIVE We have some bandages. We have some medicine for your illness. 
NEGATIVE We don't have any bandages. We don't have any IV fluids.
QUESTIONS Are there any bandages? Is there any equipment in the ambulance?
