| A family of musical instruments is a grouping of several different instruments related by sizes, types, material or how they are played. Some commonly recognized families are: STRINGS WOODWINDS BRASS PERCUSSION KEYBOARDS ELECTROPHONES |
| STRING FAMILY All string instruments produce sound from one or more vibrating strings, transferred to the air by the body of the instrument. They are usually categorized by the technique used to make the strings vibrate. The most common techniques are bowing and plucking. BOWED STRING INSTRUMENTS Bowing (Italian: Arco) is a method used in some string instruments, including the violin, viola, cello, and the double bass. The bow consists of a stick with many hairs stretched between its ends. Bowing the instrument the string vibrate. ![]() Know more about bowed string instruments here PLUCKED STRING INSTRUMENT Plucking is used as a method of playing on instruments such as the banjo, guitar, harp, and either by a finger or thumb, or by some type of plectrum (or pick). WOODWIND FAMILY
A woodwind instrument is a musical instrument that produces sound when the player blows air against a sharp edge or through a reed, causing the air within its resonator (usually a column of air) to vibrate. PERCUSSION FAMILY
A percussion instrument is a musical instrument that is sounded by being struck by a beater, by hand, or struck against another similar instrument. The percussion family is believed to include the oldest musical instruments. Percussion instruments are most commonly divided into two classes: Tuned (or pitched), which produce notes with an identifiable pitch.
