Section outline
-
Here you'll find introductory theoretical material for this comics reading club. As you know, we are going to read Superman comics from a feminist perspective; thus, learning a little bit about these two topics as a foundation for our reading club can be useful.Follow the introduction in each of the two sections devoted to comics and feminism, and then, test your knowledge with the self-assessment that appears below each section.
After that, you can start reading our first comic book, which is the original introduction of our most important characters of the series: Superman (and his alter ego Clark Kent) and Lois Lane. To the right of this text you can see the original 1938 front cover of the comic book designed and drawn by Joe Shuster.
Comics artist Joe Shuster and comics writer Jerry Siegel were the teenagers who while at high school developed their idea of a superhero called Superman. Later they sold their idea to the future company DC Comics for US$130, something that, as you can imagine, regretted all their lives.
Although this may seem a very old comic book, it may be interesting to see what the characteristics of the first Superman and Lois Lane are. That is to say, how these two 1930s teenagers imagined their superhero and his female companion, in order to compare this with the first remaking of the series we are going to read in the next comic.
