STORY: Lost in the forest

Ben, Vicky and Helen are staying at a campsite in the countryside.

Follow this path. Go to the village.
Do not go into the forest.

Take this mobile phone.
You can call me if you have a problem.

I’m going north to wait for you in the village, next to the bridge.

Ben! Mr Wise said, 'Do not go into the forest'.

It isn't a bear. It’s a fox and it’s scared.

The signpost is broken. Which way to the village?

Well, we know that the village and north are in the same direction ...

... so let’s find out which way is north.

Oh, no! I haven’t got my compass.

What are you doing?  

To find north, we put a stick in the ground. 

Then we put a stone at the end of the shadow.

And now we wait for 30 minutes.

Look! The shadow has moved.

We need to put another small stone at the end of the shadow.

And now I’m going to draw a line between the two stones.

The first stone is west. The second stone is east.

I see. So now we know that this way is north.

Exactly. Come on. Let’s go to the village.
